The Lewins Rail has a narrow distribution down the Eastern seaboard of Australia and also in Tasmania. They are generally uncommon and very secretive. These Rails prefer thick vegetation, often in tall grass, usually near water. There also seems to be a preference for Lantana weed. They are very vocal but tend to be retiring by nature. If they do break cover, their movements are very erratic, unlike their cousins, the Banded Rail.
General description
Lewin's rail is also known as the water rail, Lewin's water rail, Lewin's grind rail, slate-breasted rail, slate-breasted water rail, pectoral rail, pectoral water rail, short-toed rail and short-toed water rail. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.
