Here's my video game composition from my NEW ALBUM, "Noodles of a Game Dreamer' Forest Feels! I'm Sab and I love saxophone and video games, so now I make compositions that combine two of my favorite things!
So excited to share another track from my new album, Noodles of a Game Dreamer!
I knew I had to include a forest track on this album, otherwise, I was doing something wrong haha. If you don’t know, forest themes are some of my favorites in all of VGM. I love how forests can feel a lot of different ways. Warm, mysterious, calm, sinister, etc. I really wanted to convey the feeling of wandering among the forest and discovering new things along your path. Some calm, some mysterious.
The composition definitely took some time to get off the ground. I wrote the first minute or so and felt stuck for a very long time. Most of that was struggling to find the synth sounds I wanted to use for this track. But once I honed in on the synth sounds, the track came together so fast, until the mixing and mastering stage.
The high quintuplet part at the beginning definitely pushed my limits and my ears. There’s a filter that’s part of the preset sound, which only triggers at certain velocities and on certain pitches. Meaning this part needed very specific mixing for each instance of the VST. Ultimately, it sounds fantastic and blends beautifully with everything else in the track.
For the video, I was fortunate enough to work with an incredible videographer and editor. A few months back, I reached out to a friend about potentially shooting some videos for an upcoming album and they were on board! And while it took quite a bit to set everything up and film, it was absolutely worth every second! This is just one of the videos we filmed for Noodles of a Game Dreamer! Very excited to share another in the coming weeks!

A composition has been discovered~
This track was definitely one of my recent favorites! The Ace Attorney and Danganronpa games became a big part of my gaming circle a few years ago and I hold them pretty close to me. And the Danganronpa OSTs are really something special. The ability to create music that is simultaneously chilling and groovy is something that really stood out to me. And I feel like the culmination of these feelings is the investigation tracks in each game. They are probably one of my favorite things about Danganronpa. As Raincode’s release was nearing, I thought about how would I compose my own investigation theme?
The answer is, really quickly. This summer is super hectic for me with lots of travel and big things coming in the fall, so I’m having to work quickly to be ahead on projects. Two tracks that really inspired me were Investigation from Apollo Justice and Despair Searching from Danganronpa V3. A lot of what gives investigation themes that sly sneaking feeling to me is the sliding chromatic chords, which helped get the track going! My process afterward was a bit different than my usual compositions. I usually opt to find the sounds I want before recording more lines, but I didn’t have the luxury of time to look through all my synth sounds before filming. So I used a lot of placeholder sounds so I would be able to film each part of the composition. I think it worked to my advantage. It reminded me that more often than not, the sound you’re looking for is a combination of various sounds together.
For the melody as a whole, I think I had way too much fun with it. Because the progression is so chromatic, I decided to have the melody follow, utilizing A LOT of chromaticism throughout. It’s definitely different from my typical melodies, but I think it works with this track and the emotions being conveyed. When you’re trying to piece things together, your mind is going in a million different directions, constantly ping ponging between taking steps forward and backward.
As for the video, I felt like darker lighting would speak more to the investigation vibe. And what better way to convey the Danganronpa feeling visually than with bright, saturated colors in the room.
The mixing for this track definitely pushed me. I don’t typically work with so many harsh and hard hitting elements, so it was a huge challenge to have everything fit in the mix. While there are definitely improvements to be made moving forward, I’m pretty happy with how this turned out! The biggest challenge was definitely making sure the piano melody was crisp and clear among all the synth layers, electric piano, guitar, bass, and drums.

This cover goes out to someone very special to me.
The HG/SS version of Cianwood always seemed kind of romantic in my eyes, similar to how others have seen National Park. So I thought this song was perfect to capture the feel of Valentines Day due to the natural key of the song and the slow tempo, along with the tenor sax ;) I mean come on ;)
Also, experimenting with camera positions for saxophone covers, so sorry if the first part of the video looks a bit weird.

Recently, a friend of mine posted a cover of a song called Workin Hard by Fujii Kaze. I had never heard the song, and immediately wanted to learn it myself! The chord progression was super smooth and the Japanese lyrics were different than anything else I had encountered in the Japanese songs Ive learned so far! When I thought about writing a track like this, I was inspired by Workin Hard as well as some tracks from Dr. Stone!
I started writing Yoruzora after sketching some other composition ideas. I started with just a scatted a vocal melody after figuring out a chord progression and bass part. But I wanted to try writing lyrics. My biggest concern was repeating lyrics from older songs, since this felt very spacey and like the night sky.
So I tried to write Japanese lyrics! Ive studied Japanese for the past few years and never done Japanese lyrics like this for a song. It was a lot of fun to write lyrics in another language! Especially since Japanese is different than English with lyric construction and flexibility.
I kept this short since my vocabulary is still limited in Japanese and I didnt want to be too repetitive. But it was a fun experiment to do something different! Not only with lyrics, but another language as well!
I wanted to use my colored lights for this one, but couldnt get them quite right in the new set up. Thankfully, color correction came to my rescue to get those dreamy space colors!

This was such a fun project to put together. I seriously cannot thank David Peacock enough for this! I asked him about writing a piece for my senior recital last November and having it be a selection of music from Chrono Trigger. If you didnt know, Chrono Trigger is my favorite game haha! It just so happened that Chrono Trigger is Davids favorite game too! He had never written anything for saxophone, but he did such an amazing job. He did thorough research and worked with me over logistics.
He did such a beautiful job weaving together all the songs I wanted included, and even having motives overlap throughout the medley! I wanted to do something fun since the video is a single shot from my recital. Ive had fun incorporating particles into videos recently, having the color reflect the emotion or setting I associate with that moment in the game. I wanted to use that here in this medley, as well as change the speed of the particles depending on the intensity of the song.
This was such a fitting ending to my senior recital. I played Chrono Trigger my first year of college and its held a special place in my heart ever since. It also wouldnt be my recital if there wasnt video game music haha! I also cannot thank Yoshiko enough for all her hard work. She knew all the other music in the recital well before my recital, but she also worked so hard to bring this arrangement to life.

You know there had to be AT LEAST one song about flowers this year!
For this track, I wanted to explore how relationships can change; where someone can be a stranger to you at first and then become a good friend or like family to you.
I had the pleasure of getting to meet Mat4yo last year at MAGFest and knew I had to do a track with him! Matteo is a lyrical storyteller and I wanted to help him tell a story. I learned 2 very important things about Matteo when I first met him, he loves preservation and his wife. While I’ve only known Matteo for a year, both him and his wife are like family to me. I’ve seen so many important moments from throughout their lives through his personal documentation, and the love he feels for his family, especially his wife, Christina, is so strong and warm.
And as Matteo and Christina were beginning to embark on a new chapter a few months ago, I wanted to help Matteo tell a musical story about it. Matteo and Christina have been together for over 10 years. They started as friends, they dated, they got engaged, they got married, and they wanted to start a new journey together, as parents. This track is all about the evolution of relationships and it’s been amazing to watch theirs blossom into this new place!
I wanted to keep the instrumental portion of this fairly simple (at first) to give Matteo a backdrop to do what he does best. I was inspired by the simplicity and beauty of Hidetake Takayama’s album Right Time + Right Music. After creating a rough backing, Matteo and I sat on call and brainstormed the specific approach we wanted to take with this song. Within 12 hours of this call, Matteo had sent me full lyrics and extended the length of the backing I gave him by a full minute. I was utterly shocked…After that, I went back into the instrumental to reflect the lyrics he wrote and help tell the story further.
As for the video, this is a VERY different direction than I’ve ever taken before. I normally just film myself performing the different components of the song, with the occasional B roll footage. This was… not that. I’m very thankful that Matteo has captured so many moments of his relationship over the past 10 years to help visually tell this story. And I’m terrible about documenting things myself, so I’m thankful Matteo caught some nice moments for me as well when we visited him and Christina last year~
I know this isn’t the traditional video game composition I do here, but this track is very special, and I was so happy to work with Matteo! Huge congratulations to him and Christina for entering this new chapter of their lives 💜

Mat4yo is known for his lyricism featured heavily in the Nerdcore music space and on CamSteady’s rap cyphers. Mat4yo rap can be notably heard in TheCamSteady’s Pokemon Trainer Rap Cypher, Pokemon Champions Cypher, and Pokemon Eeveelutions cypher. He was also a writer for Epic Rap Battles of History in 2016. SAB pulled from her RnB Music Theory knowledge and lo-fi music experience to create this chill backdrop for the track. Game loading: Please wait and groove in the meantime~
A few weeks ago I was playing piano with a friend and started playing this bass line. I just kept looping it and they said it reminded them of a game loading screen. And I took that idea and ran with it!
I wanted to keep this simple with very few layers popping in and out. The bassline is the backbone of the piece just constantly moving with the other layers filling the gaps in between. This was such a fun little groove to write and just jam on! Alternating between the bass line groove and just little solos as the tune builds and dips~
For the video, I wanted to show how I typically record, which is just at my desk, having a good time! I play what comes to my head and see where it goes!
Just like I’m excited for the music I have coming up later this year! Quite a few things in the works that are something special!

Carlos and I were playing Octopath Traveler when we would be at the hotel with my family in Japan! It was so much fun to listen to so much of the music in game and watch others cover the music!
I decided it would be awesome to cover some of the Octopath Traveler music, and since the game is all about teamwork and collaboration, I wanted to do some collaborations!
I love working with this wind quartet! Dan, Brooke, and Michael did a phenomenal job and they had about a week to get everything to me for the video! Octopath Travelers music orchestration is very different. Its important to match the original ranges, otherwise it throws off the balance of the sound.
Octopath Traveler reminds me of Chrono Trigger a bit in art style, plot, and music! So naturally, its become high up on my list of games I like!
Im excited to do more Octopath Traveler covers in the future! Most of them will be collaborations! Excited to share more Octopath stuff with you!

This project was so much fun! Brooke is such an incredibly talented musician and so fun to work. Miphas Theme is such a beautiful piece and hearing it in game was amazing.
It took me a long time to see Mipha after the battle, and I recently rewatched the cutscene with Mipha and Link and really realized how beautiful this track really is.
Brooke and I thought the best way to do this tune was a jazz ballad because of the emotions associated with it. Miphas Theme is sad, but sweet. Its definitely reflective of Miphas personality.
This was my first Zelda game I have ever played through and I thought it was a fantastic game. Im excited to play more Zelda games!
