You know there had to be AT LEAST one song about flowers this year!

For this track, I wanted to explore how relationships can change; where someone can be a stranger to you at first and then become a good friend or like family to you.

I had the pleasure of getting to meet Mat4yo last year at MAGFest and knew I had to do a track with him! Matteo is a lyrical storyteller and I wanted to help him tell a story. I learned 2 very important things about Matteo when I first met him, he loves preservation and his wife. While I’ve only known Matteo for a year, both him and his wife are like family to me. I’ve seen so many important moments from throughout their lives through his personal documentation, and the love he feels for his family, especially his wife, Christina, is so strong and warm.

And as Matteo and Christina were beginning to embark on a new chapter a few months ago, I wanted to help Matteo tell a musical story about it. Matteo and Christina have been together for over 10 years. They started as friends, they dated, they got engaged, they got married, and they wanted to start a new journey together, as parents. This track is all about the evolution of relationships and it’s been amazing to watch theirs blossom into this new place!

I wanted to keep the instrumental portion of this fairly simple (at first) to give Matteo a backdrop to do what he does best. I was inspired by the simplicity and beauty of Hidetake Takayama’s album Right Time + Right Music. After creating a rough backing, Matteo and I sat on call and brainstormed the specific approach we wanted to take with this song. Within 12 hours of this call, Matteo had sent me full lyrics and extended the length of the backing I gave him by a full minute. I was utterly shocked…After that, I went back into the instrumental to reflect the lyrics he wrote and help tell the story further.

As for the video, this is a VERY different direction than I’ve ever taken before. I normally just film myself performing the different components of the song, with the occasional B roll footage. This was… not that. I’m very thankful that Matteo has captured so many moments of his relationship over the past 10 years to help visually tell this story. And I’m terrible about documenting things myself, so I’m thankful Matteo caught some nice moments for me as well when we visited him and Christina last year~

I know this isn’t the traditional video game composition I do here, but this track is very special, and I was so happy to work with Matteo! Huge congratulations to him and Christina for entering this new chapter of their lives 💜

ABOUT THIS VIDEO:

Mat4yo is known for his lyricism featured heavily in the Nerdcore music space and on CamSteady’s rap cyphers. Mat4yo rap can be notably heard in TheCamSteady’s Pokemon Trainer Rap Cypher, Pokemon Champions Cypher, and Pokemon Eeveelutions cypher. He was also a writer for Epic Rap Battles of History in 2016. SAB pulled from her RnB Music Theory knowledge and lo-fi music experience to create this chill backdrop for the track.
