Here's my video game composition from my NEW ALBUM, "Noodles of a Game Dreamer' Cozy Cosmics 2! I'm Sab and I love saxophone and video games, so now I make compositions that combine two of my favorite things!
It wouldnโt be the end of a video game without a vocal track to wrap it all up!
Some of you might remember Cozy Cosmics from a few years back. It was one of the first originals I did on my YouTube in 2021. And when I started working on Noodles of a Game Dreamer the next year, I knew I had to include this track! But I wanted to revamp it a little. Iโve learned a lot since first composing and producing this track in 2021 and wanted to show it! Which is why the title of this track is Cozy Cosmics 2!
The vocals probably went through 5 rounds of re-recordings, but ultimately I think it was well worth it. For awhile, I felt like the production and mix on Cozy Cosmics 2 was sounding worse and just not capturing the feel I wanted from the track compared to the original. And one day I finally got out of my own head, and decided to listen to the original Cozy Cosmics for the first time in months. And I felt so foolish for thinking I hadnโt improved or that Cozy Cosmics 2 didnโt sound better than the original.
As for the video, I was fortunate enough to work with Kevin Krust again! He directed, filmed, and edited Forest Feels, which turned out incredibly! And Iโm so happy with how Cozy Cosmics 2 turned out! He did an incredible job capturing that spacey feel, especially with the lighting throughout the various sections!

Here we are at the final video of 2023! Its definitely been a wild year for me and Im ready for next year!
This composition was actually one of the first originals I started writing back in 2021. I dont remember too well what my inspiration was for this track, but I remember the bass line being the first thing I wrote for this track. It felt like the driving force, which is how I landed with the title Perpetual Groove, very early on in the process.
After coming up with the main bass line, I got a bit stuck with this piece. I heard a specific chord comping pattern with the piano, but had this technical bass line that I wanted in the piano as well. So the piece was shelved for years, until a month ago.
I was going through folders on my computer, and was reminded of this composition in late November. And I felt inspired to pick it up again! I really wanted to push to finish it. As soon, as I opened the project file, I remembered exactly what I wanted to do with this piece, and was able to apply a lot of what I learned about composition in this piece.
The biggest challenge for this one was the mix for sure. Ive been away traveling for a lot of December and havent been doing too much mixing since October. I almost felt like I had to relearn how to mix. But ultimately, Im really happy with how it turned out! The 2 biggest things that really made this mix come together were having a mixing reference (Desire by Hiromi Uehara), and building the mix one instrument at a time. I started with the drums, then bass, saxes, flutes, and finally the piano. I made sure all the pieces fit together, making adjustments as I went with each new instrument added.
Happy to end this year with a bang (er)! And Im incredibly excited to share all the cool stuff happening in 2024! For now though, I hope you enjoy this original jazz composition, #PerpetualGroove done by me #SabIrene

I AM SO EXCITED!
Sapphire and I have been talking about this collab for awhile. We got to finally meet at MAGFest this year and had so much fun! It made us even more excited for this project!
I wanted to keep things pretty close to the original arrangement, to an extent haha. I wanted to have it open really chill and relaxing before things got crazy. The original is so upbeat, but I tried playing it slow one day and really liked how it sounded.
One of the toughest challenges was the montuno piano part around the 4 minute mark. Its a specific type of rhythm and style that is a bit tough on the wrists at even slow tempos. There were a lot of fun challenges with that small section in terms of instruments, style, techniques, etc.
I cannot thank Sapphire enough for everything she did for the cover! She did an amazing job with the vocals, but also mixing this cover! She is such a wonderful person and musician to work with!

This has been one of my favorite projects this year! My good friend, TerribleTavi had mentioned commissioning me back in December when we were first met. At PAX East, we talked about it more and got started working on this right after PAX!
The goal was to create a chiptune track that made one feel like they were running through the night and about to take flight. There was a lot of new stuff for me to learn and channel in this! It was a different type of storytelling, but such a fun challenge!
I typically sketch everything in a voice memo app just singing and playing piano. And I just started working with chiptune sounds a few weeks before Tavi and I talked at PAX. It was so much fun to mess around with new sounds and see how it help shift my compositional style and approach!
Every time I sent Tavi a draft, I was super happy with the results and happy to keep pushing this track to the next level!

Im so glad I finally got to film a video outside! Its been quite awhile!
I was definitely super inspired by the Floral Folklore album released in late May from Infloresce Records. I had listened to it a few days before I started writing this track myself. I loved the whole album being based around different flowers, mythology, and folk tales. It just spoke to so much of what I enjoy in music and try to channel in my own musical storytelling.
I sat down at my piano 5 minutes before I had to head out and recorded the initial idea for this track. And man was it a journey afterward haha. I really liked the form of the composition, however I could not figure out the instruments I wanted to use. Back in late May I was really exploring chiptune sounds, and wanted to work those into this track, but have piano be the focal point.
I sat on the tune for quite awhile after the first 2 weeks of working on it. And being outside surrounded by flowers, sparked my inspiration to finally finish it! I actually ended up filming the video before I finished adding all the parts in the composition itself. It ended up working out to push me to finish the composition to be able to share with you all!
Next month will probably be pretty quiet with a lot of personal things I gotta take care of, but know that Im still working hard and making music everyday!

Its been a bit! My goal every month is to try and write something working on a skill I feel needs improvement in my composition work. Its a nice way to keep learning and experimenting with new sounds and styles!
My goal with this tune was to play with an ostinato again, but also playing with a chord progression I really liked! I recently watched Dr. Stone, and loved it! The third openings chord progression stuck out to me and I wanted to play around with it myself and see what I could do with it.
I recently started messing with chiptune sounds and thought this was a great way to put it into practice!
I definitely wanted to do jazz fusion with a chiptune lead, kinda reminiscent of Steven Universe in a way! I really struggled with writing a melody for this one, and sent what I had to my friend ThunderScott and he came up with the first chiptune melody you hear in the piece! A huge thanks to him for helping me out!
I didnt have a specific context in mind in terms of the setting of the piece, so Im interested to know what you all heard! Let me know in the comments!

Let me start by telling you this was not the original cover scheduled for today. I moved things around after I put out Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There. Things have changed so much in the world in 2 weeks. I wanted to push up this cover given the state of the world right now, at least my perception.
Things have been difficult and sad, but there is hope. I really feel like City of Tears embodies those feelings and sentiments strongly. In the game you are traveling for awhile, before you arrive at this hub and start to learn more about your mission. It is such a beautiful tune, and I wanted to keep it simple. I wanted to craft the arrangement around the final section. Ive had that in my head for months, which inspired this cover. I couldnt find some taiko drum samples, so I did my best to replicate it through Middle Eastern drums I have, bass drums, and timpani!
This tune is very light and effervescent, so I wanted to keep minimal instrumentation. It helped to really highlight the colors and ranges of each instrument used. I originally wanted to use other woodwinds in this cover, but the color of the clarinet blended best with everything else I was using. But I really wanted the main focus to be vocals in this cover.
With everything happening, its important to raise voices. Whether it be your own or amplifying voices of others to inspire change.
Often, I struggle to find the words to express how I feel, and music helps me greatly. Music has always allowed me to process my emotions and channel them into my playing.
Things have not only been difficult in the world, but on a personal level for me. There is so much uncertainty, fear, and sadness in my own life. So to me, this cover was a beacon of light to better understand how Im feeling and understand that something will come. It is important that we never lose hope in life, no matter how tough things get. When we fear, we need to try and find hope and have that pull us out of our own darkness.

For the past few weeks, Ive been trying to figure out my last two videos for the year. Having only the first half of the month to work probably didnt help. As I was prepping things to record for a different project Saturday morning, I happened to see Husky by the Geeks entry for Austin Wintorys composer contest!
I was instantly intrigued and stopped prepping one project, and went to straight to the piano. I thought about how could I transform the 12 notes into my own melody and composition? Since I learned about the contest only a few days before submissions closed, I opted to keep it simple and do a solo piano work. Something Ive never actually done before! Piano is often the backbone of my tracks, but never the sole thing. It was definitely a challenge, but one I was up for!
After playing around with a few chords, I immediately saw a lush, vibrant prairie like you would see in a Studio Ghibli film; and just all the sensory aspects of nature. Ive always felt peaceful with multiple aspects of nature. Wandering through woods and forests, watching the sun rise and set, and being near water like an ocean or river. And I was reminded of something from my college days studying Japanese. There are many single words in Japanese that embody a whole concept or phrase, which is often difficult to translate to other languages. One of those words Ive always enjoyed is ๆจๆผใๆฅ (komorebi), meaning sun peaking through the foilage. And while its a beautiful concept, that wasnt what I felt embodied this composition. So I searched for similar words, and found ๆฃฎๆๆตด (shinrinyoku). Which literally means forest bathing, but more broadly, is the therapeutic act of spending time in nature to cleanse and relax. Which, perfectly captured the feeling of this piece. Staring out at a vibrant, open field, feeling the wind sweep across the greenery and oneself, making you feel as though your an extension of nature.
I would say the most difficult portion of this project was the mixing. Ive never mixed solo piano before. And it was definitely a challenge. How do you make a delicate piano piece feel full without using a limiter? How do you EQ a piano to capture all ranges? Well the answer is, very carefully and a lot of automated FX :) My goal was to have the fullness of the piano, with a light sparkle! And making sure it was maintained despite using different EQs and levels of compression throughout the piece. It was a really fun challenge and Im ultimately really happy with it!
As for the video, this was all recorded in one take live, so its a bit more on the simplistic side. I know the angle isnt the best either, but my focus was the composition itself!
