I knew I had to end this year with a bang! And what better way than to bring Lacey Johnson on for a track!

In the fall, I was thinking about tracks to end the year off, and with the Sonic 3 movie releasing around then, I was thinking about how we haven’t seen any of the female characters from Sonic represented in the movies. I thought it would be fun to do a song highlighting some of the badass women in Sonic and turning things on their head.

I knew I had to ask Lacey to be on this track! We had so much fun writing the lyrics for the song together! Both Lacey and I don’t write lyrics super often, so it was nice to be able to bounce ideas with each other and figure out what works. Plus the song has a very Persona vibe, which is right up both of our alleys haha.

This song definitely pushed me on all fronts. I’m known for very soft, chill lo-fi music, but decided to make this a hard-hitting disco/funk track. Getting the right snare sound was definitely a time for this one. Because everything had to be loud and punchy, it was a bit difficult getting good volume levels and compression on everything. This track was also my first time recording with my new Shure KSM44A! It was super nice to finally upgrade my mic after many years from an AT2020. Balancing the spacing of everything was definitely a big challenge. I used different mics and set ups for my vocals and saxes, and pairing that with Lacey’s vocals and guitars was a big challenge, but one I was definitely up for!
As for the video, I was lucky to be able to work with KevinKrust again! He’s done a few videos for the channel now, and it’s always fun getting to work with him on these videos! We tried to keep it pretty simple this time around as we only had a few days before the video release to knock this out.

ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
This Sonic 3 Song inspired by the movie Sonic the Hedgehog 3 features Amy Rose and Rouge the Bat written and performed by Sab Irene and Lacey Johnson Music. The Sonic the Hedgehog movies and especially the Sonic 3 Post Credit Scene and Sonic 3 Post Credit Scene 2 were huge inspirations for the transformation of this idea. The classic Sonic and Amy squad and Rouge the Bat have "yet to be seen" on the big screen in Live Action, so SAB and LaceyJohnsonMusic took it into their hands to make that happen. This Sonic Mix puts Sab's history with Sonic Music Theory on display, since most Sonic music be like nostalgic and there is usually a very specific tone and vibe to a Sonic remix that Sab_Irene tried to capture and showcase. The Sonic Soundtrack (OST) and Sonic Amy Theme songs as well as Sonic Rouge Theme songs have always been standouts, which made this a natural choice for inspiration.
