For the past few weeks, I've been trying to figure out my last two videos for the year. Having only the first half of the month to work probably didn't help. As I was prepping things to record for a different project Saturday morning, I happened to see Husky by the Geek's entry for Austin Wintory's composer contest!
I was instantly intrigued and stopped prepping one project, and went to straight to the piano. I thought about how could I transform the 12 notes into my own melody and composition? Since I learned about the contest only a few days before submissions closed, I opted to keep it simple and do a solo piano work. Something I've never actually done before! Piano is often the backbone of my tracks, but never the sole thing. It was definitely a challenge, but one I was up for!
After playing around with a few chords, I immediately saw a lush, vibrant prairie like you would see in a Studio Ghibli film; and just all the sensory aspects of nature. I've always felt peaceful with multiple aspects of nature. Wandering through woods and forests, watching the sun rise and set, and being near water like an ocean or river. And I was reminded of something from my college days studying Japanese. There are many single words in Japanese that embody a whole concept or phrase, which is often difficult to translate to other languages. One of those words I've always enjoyed is ๆจๆผใๆฅ (komorebi), meaning sun peaking through the foilage. And while it's a beautiful concept, that wasn't what I felt embodied this composition. So I searched for similar words, and found ๆฃฎๆๆตด (shinrinyoku). Which literally means forest bathing, but more broadly, is the therapeutic act of spending time in nature to cleanse and relax. Which, perfectly captured the feeling of this piece. Staring out at a vibrant, open field, feeling the wind sweep across the greenery and oneself, making you feel as though your an extension of nature.
I would say the most difficult portion of this project was the mixing. I've never mixed solo piano before. And it was definitely a challenge. How do you make a delicate piano piece feel full without using a limiter? How do you EQ a piano to capture all ranges? Well the answer is, very carefully and a lot of automated FX :) My goal was to have the fullness of the piano, with a light sparkle! And making sure it was maintained despite using different EQs and levels of compression throughout the piece. It was a really fun challenge and I'm ultimately really happy with it!
As for the video, this was all recorded in one take live, so it's a bit more on the simplistic side. I know the angle isn't the best either, but my focus was the composition itself!
Regardless, I hope you enjoy this tranquil Ghibli inspired solo piano piece, ๆฃฎๆๆตด~

I have wanted to cover this track FOREVER! And Im so glad I finally figured out an arrangement for it! Ive been playing the WarioWare demo the past few weeks and am super excited for WarioWare Get It Together to release next week!
For this project, I knew I had to bring my friend Josh on board! Hes an incredible guitar player and has been singing a lot recently! I met Josh over 5 years ago at Berklee, but this is actually the first time weve made music together!
I really wanted to slow down the tune and make it a bit more chill and allow Joshs guitar playing to really shine! I kept making stank faces whenever I listened back Joshs recordings while I worked! It also helped that I could really focus on singing the vocal lines properly. The melodic lines in this tune are a bit jumpy, and the slow tempo really allowed me to practice hitting the right pitches.
I as always wanted to add in extra vocal parts for color, but I think my favorite vocal part is the bridge with the little echoes! It was a very last minute addition, but definitely worth it in the end!
I wanted to channel a little bit of Halloween vibes into this cover, but trust me, the Halloween video this year is gonna be very... different and ambitious to say the least.
Super excited to have finally worked with Josh on a tune we both enjoy! Hope you all enjoy this vocal cover of #AshleysTheme from #WarioWare done by #SabIrene and Josh Vasquez!

This track definitely has a bit of a weird story. Ive felt a lot of pressure for the past few months when I trying to compose new stuff, boxing myself into writing different area themes. So I took a step back, and just tried to create something new, with no expectation for it to end up on YouTube. And I really loved the chord progression I came up with for this one!
I thought about adding lyrics to this one, but I was already a bit behind schedule, so opted to go with scatting. I was inspired by The Consouls cover of Secret of the Deep Sea from Final Fantasy VII for the feel of this song when the drums come in. After establishing the core of the song, I felt like I only needed to add one little thing. And Ive been playing through Portal 2 for the first time, and loving the sound design in that game! Theres a section of the game where interacting with a certain substance, cues a really playful arpeggiator on a synth, and wanted to channel that into this composition!
I realized it kind of gave the track an underwater vibe, and ran with it! I kept the video pretty simple, trying to highlight shades of blue and show different sides of waters motions. I love in underwater photos and videos that you can see the light shining through the waters surface. And I really like the wavy motions for when the tune picks up.
Hope you enjoy this underwater vgm theme Depths of Beauty!

CHOOSE YOUR CHARACTER!
One thing I struggle with as a composer is breaking out of my comfort zone on my own. When I have clients requesting different styles, I rise to the challenge! But when itโs something for myself, I tend to shy away or just try too hard to come up with something different, forgetting what makes my music sound like me.
Iโve felt a bit stuck as Iโve been working on a lot of long term projects and had a lot of travel recently for events. I was really inspired by miles morkri, who posts new music on Twitter almost everyday. Their work is so amazing and inspiring, always building and pushing themselves. They give themselves a different prompt each day and just write. It made me want to try doing the same thing. To give myself a prompt and write at least 30 seconds of music in a new style. While Iโve done funk music before, Iโve never really done synth funk stuff, which was a fun challenge finding the sounds and doing the mixing on it.
I was heavily inspired by Alex Moukala, when thinking of funky bass lines and drums that hit hard. This helped lay the groundwork for the A section of the track. And it started to give me fighting game character select vibes, so I ran with it! When I was thinking of where to take the track next, I thought of the B section to Celebration by Kool and the Gang. It gave me inspiration for a chord progression close to my usual stuff. And I had to inject some chiptune into the track! It was fun getting to tackle 2 different sides of funk and push myself to do something more upbeat and hard hitting!
