Here's my video game digital fusion composition Loading Screen! I'm Sab and I love saxophone and video games, so now I make covers that combine two of my favorite things!

A few weeks ago I was playing piano with a friend and started playing this bass line. I just kept looping it and they said it reminded them of a game loading screen. And I took that idea and ran with it!
I wanted to keep this simple with very few layers popping in and out. The bassline is the backbone of the piece just constantly moving with the other layers filling the gaps in between. This was such a fun little groove to write and just jam on! Alternating between the bass line groove and just little solos as the tune builds and dips~
For the video, I wanted to show how I typically record, which is just at my desk, having a good time! I play what comes to my head and see where it goes!
Just like Iโm excited for the music I have coming up later this year! Quite a few things in the works that are something special!

I WAS SO EXCITED FOR THIS VIDEO! IF YOU HAVENT PLAYED OCTOPATH TRAVELER YET, ITS AMAZING!
Carlos and I were playing Octopath Traveler when we would be at the hotel with my family in Japan! It was so much fun to listen to so much of the music in game and watch others cover the music!
I decided it would be awesome to cover some of the Octopath Traveler music, and since the game is all about teamwork and collaboration, I wanted to do some collaborations!
I love working with this wind quartet! Dan, Brooke, and Michael did a phenomenal job and they had about a week to get everything to me for the video! Octopath Travelers music orchestration is very different. Its important to match the original ranges, otherwise it throws off the balance of the sound.
Octopath Traveler reminds me of Chrono Trigger a bit in art style, plot, and music! So naturally, its become high up on my list of games I like!
Im excited to do more Octopath Traveler covers in the future! Most of them will be collaborations! Excited to share more Octopath stuff with you!

This project was so much fun! Brooke is such an incredibly talented musician and so fun to work. Miphas Theme is such a beautiful piece and hearing it in game was amazing.
It took me a long time to see Mipha after the battle, and I recently rewatched the cutscene with Mipha and Link and really realized how beautiful this track really is.
Brooke and I thought the best way to do this tune was a jazz ballad because of the emotions associated with it. Miphas Theme is sad, but sweet. Its definitely reflective of Miphas personality.
This was my first Zelda game I have ever played through and I thought it was a fantastic game. Im excited to play more Zelda games!

It was only fitting after covering Agniratha Night that I covered Agniratha Day! But this time, I wanted to work with my wonderful quartet on this track!
One of my favorites sections in the tune is towards the end with this killer piano part! Once I heard that piano part, I knew I had to cover this! I really wanted to extend that part and create solo sections. I wanted to blend the quartet with a rhythm section. Using the piano really allowed everyone in the quartet to play all the unique countermelodies in the tune. The orchestration is so beautiful in the original, and I wanted to make it my own!
Ive really been enjoying Xenoblade music and hope to cover more of it before the end of 2020. But next time, there will be spoOoOoky cover!

Here we are at the final video of 2023! Its definitely been a wild year for me and Im ready for next year!
This composition was actually one of the first originals I started writing back in 2021. I dont remember too well what my inspiration was for this track, but I remember the bass line being the first thing I wrote for this track. It felt like the driving force, which is how I landed with the title Perpetual Groove, very early on in the process.
After coming up with the main bass line, I got a bit stuck with this piece. I heard a specific chord comping pattern with the piano, but had this technical bass line that I wanted in the piano as well. So the piece was shelved for years, until a month ago.
I was going through folders on my computer, and was reminded of this composition in late November. And I felt inspired to pick it up again! I really wanted to push to finish it. As soon, as I opened the project file, I remembered exactly what I wanted to do with this piece, and was able to apply a lot of what I learned about composition in this piece.
The biggest challenge for this one was the mix for sure. Ive been away traveling for a lot of December and havent been doing too much mixing since October. I almost felt like I had to relearn how to mix. But ultimately, Im really happy with how it turned out! The 2 biggest things that really made this mix come together were having a mixing reference (Desire by Hiromi Uehara), and building the mix one instrument at a time. I started with the drums, then bass, saxes, flutes, and finally the piano. I made sure all the pieces fit together, making adjustments as I went with each new instrument added.
Happy to end this year with a bang (er)! And Im incredibly excited to share all the cool stuff happening in 2024! For now though, I hope you enjoy this original jazz composition, #PerpetualGroove done by me #SabIrene

I AM SO EXCITED!
Sapphire and I have been talking about this collab for awhile. We got to finally meet at MAGFest this year and had so much fun! It made us even more excited for this project!
I wanted to keep things pretty close to the original arrangement, to an extent haha. I wanted to have it open really chill and relaxing before things got crazy. The original is so upbeat, but I tried playing it slow one day and really liked how it sounded.
One of the toughest challenges was the montuno piano part around the 4 minute mark. Its a specific type of rhythm and style that is a bit tough on the wrists at even slow tempos. There were a lot of fun challenges with that small section in terms of instruments, style, techniques, etc.
I cannot thank Sapphire enough for everything she did for the cover! She did an amazing job with the vocals, but also mixing this cover! She is such a wonderful person and musician to work with!
