Come and join me as I take a closer look at the beautiful Folkloric Waters Tarot by Lennox Rees, a 78 card deck inspired by water, folklore, nature, Northern European traditions and the mysterious, sometimes unforgiving relationship we have with the natural world.
This is the second deck in Lennox’s Folkloric series, following the Folkloric Forest Tarot, and what immediately drew me to this deck is the artwork. Rather than commissioning traditional illustrations, Lennox has carefully curated historical artwork from the public domain and brought these beautiful old paintings together to create an entirely new tarot world.
And you know how much I love a beautifully curated art deck! When historical artwork is selected thoughtfully and the images genuinely speak to the tarot archetypes, I find there is something incredibly special about it. These are artworks with their own stories, histories and atmosphere, and seeing them given a new life through tarot really speaks to my soul.
In this walkthrough I’ll be sharing the cards, the packaging, production quality, cardstock, guidebook and the overall concept behind the deck, as well as taking a closer look at how Lennox has interpreted the familiar tarot system through the themes of water, folklore and the natural world.
The deck follows the RWS system, with the four suits represented by the elements of Fire, Water, Air and Earth, alongside some wonderfully evocative changes to the Major Arcana.
There is something wonderfully atmospheric about this deck. It’s beautiful, but it isn’t simply pretty. There is darkness here too, survival, uncertainty, emotion, death, nature and the things we cannot control.
So let’s dive in and explore the Folkloric Waters Tarot together.
