Dorothy Cross is one of Ireland’s leading contemporary artists, known for poetic works that explore memory, identity, and the natural world. Her commission for Folkestone Triennial 2025: How Lies the Land?, Red Erratic, places a Syrian marble boulder between land and sea, topped with a pair of carved human feet. Echoing geological “erratics” moved by glaciers, the sculpture reflects on displacement, migration, and change. With quiet power, it invites contemplation of presence and absence, asking how people—like stones—are shaped by journey, loss, and survival. A meditation on movement, history, and what we carry with us.
