A favorite point of interest in Mt. Airy, NC to fans of The Andy Griffith Show is Floyd's City Barber Shop. It opened it's doors for business in 1926, next door to Snappy Lunch. One of the barbers in that shop, Russell Hiatt was one of the barbers. In 1947 he was the last man standing and became owner of the business. He was Andy Griffith's Barber up until he left home. After Andy Griffith became Sheriff Andy Taylor on the Andy Griffith Show, him hometown began to become place of interest to Andy Griffith Fans. In 1990 the first Mayberry Days festival took place in honor of the show's 30th anniversary. Mayberry Days has been an annual event every year to this day. Tens of thousands attend the event each year. Over the years Russell affectionately became called Floyd the barber by most fans and visitors to his barber shop. Russell cut hair in the shop until he was 90 years old before he decided to retire. Russell passed away in 2016 and his son Bill Hiatt picked up the torch and kept the doors open for fans and tourist alike...none the less...it was still a real barber shop and you could get you hair cut and a shave. Recently, Bill said, "It's just time" and decided to put the shop up for sale and after a while closed the shop. Bill and his father Russell built a legacy and many thousands of fan an visitors have enjoyed the Mayberry Experience.
