Vortex valves are a type of flow control device that operates similarly to an orifice. An advantage of vortex valves is that you are able to maintain a larger diameter opening when compared to a similarly performing orifice, reducing its potential to get clogged with debris during a storm event. Because of the larger opening, the vortex valve passes more flow during the early part of a storm. When the water level rises, a vortex core forms to restrict the flow.
