Microsoft Word numbers footnotes and endnotes in Roman numerals, because of course it does. To change that, click in any one of them, then right click, choose Footnotes — even if you’re using Endnotes instead — then change the Number format to what you want, and click Apply. It didn’t just take me an hour to figure that out.
