G'day everyone, we are almost at an end to our series on fixing the lathe gearbox.

After making the pump and brackets we can now get around to getting the oil filter put on the lathe's gearbox. As some people have said, doing this is not very common for many types of gearboxes, but due to the design of the gearbox, and the soft steel gears, there is so much excess wear metal being deposited into the oil. And because it lacks a deep sump, away from the spinning gears, the metal keeps getting mixed back into the oil and splashes directly into the gears and bearings,

So before I spend $300 in bearings and seals I would like to install a simple filter and pump. Cheap insurance against this problem happening again in a year or two.
