Old tools were built to last, but if they're used for long enough something is bound to break. So what if you can take that old broken tool and make new parts for it which are just as strong, or stronger than the original using 3D printing with Carbon Fiber filament? On top of that, would it also be possible to make the tool even better while were at it? That's what we're investigating in this video.
In this video I focus on the hand-plane but these techniques can be applied to anything. I've seen so many of these with broken handles / totes that I had to do something about it. On top of that, I found that my hand didn't fit well at all, it was super uncomfortable to hold onto it, and with my fingers rubbing against the metal on the hand-plane, it was causing a lot of pain over a long period of use. So why not also address this issue if we're going to design a new knob and tote for this plane.
As usual I'm using the Bambu X-1 Carbon in this video, but I also like to use Creality Hyper PLA, it is by far the most accurate filament I've used so far.
Printing with Carbon Fiber PETG wasn't as straight forward as I had hoped; it all came down to the size of the parts I was printing and maxing the cooling. With full cooling I was able to get really good results. I'm not certain printing with CF long-term is a good idea, it's bound to wear down the printer, but the X-1 Carbon does have it in the name, I can only hope that it can live up to its name.
