In the first of many expert sessions for an authentic project learning experience for K-12 students, we kicked off the learning with a soft launch. This was an incredible session where we were able to connect wtih a phenomenal experet, Kallie Moore(you might know her from the awesome PBS Eons show or her new book)
Kallie Moore manages the paleontology collection at the University of Montana and co-host the YouTube channel PBS Eons. She has also consulted for Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park on renovations to the DINOSAUR ride, as well as hosted a livestream for the newly opened Deep Time Hall at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. Kallie’s debut nonfiction book, Tales of the Prehistoric World: Adventures from the Land of the Dinosaurs, releases this fall from Neon Squid books.

The Big 5 Mass Extinctions
Survival – what happens after an extinction event?
Lystrosaurus – case study
This is part of an authentic learning experience for K-12 students studying the driving question, “What are the ingredients required to survive regardless of time, space, and place?”
The goal and purpose of this session was to begin to plant the seeds of ideas about survival. Exploring the past to understand what survived and how during five mass extinctions will be a springboard of new thoughts as we later connect with NASA and other domains to further understand what it takes be successful and survive no matter who we are, where we live, and when we live.
