In this episode, we introduce the new TCI 4L80E 6X 6-speed transmission, rated for up to 800 horsepower and packaged in a standard 4L80E case. This transmission will give the Big Block 454 Chevelle a much-needed overdrive gear for long drag-and-drive and Rocky Mountain Race Week miles, while still providing the strength and gearing this car needs.
The problem? The Chevelle’s transmission tunnel was designed around the much smaller TH350. The TCI 4L80E 6X is considerably larger, so the first step is figuring out exactly where the transmission hits and how much clearance is required.
We begin with an initial transmission fitment check, inspect the clearance around the tunnel and floor, and determine where cutting needs to start. Then we cut a section of the Chevelle’s floor and reinstall the transmission to check the new clearance. We also begin working through the challenges of adapting the transmission crossmember to the longer 4L80E transmission.
This is the beginning of our 4L80E swap in a 1964 Chevelle, including transmission tunnel clearance, floor modification, crossmember fitment, and the next steps toward getting Paige ready for more long-distance raceweek driving.
The new raceweek trailer also makes a brief appearance at the end, along with the plan for final transmission mounting and the next stage of the build.
