Friday, April 21, 2023 - IVELIZ EXPLAINS IT ALL BY ANDREA BEATRIZ ARANGO It’s April and that means it’s also National Poetry Month! To celebrate, I’ll be sharing a middle grade novel in verse each week! This week I’ll be sharing Iveliz Explains it All, an amazing book about one girl’s grief and mental health journey. Sometimes we need to read books about hard things to learn how to deal with them in our own lives or to learn how to help a friend. This is one of those important books. The Newbery committee must have agreed, because they gave this book the Newbery Honor Award in 2023. Listen in as I read aloud.

Please note, this book includes some difficult topics including grief, death of a parent, mental health, self-harm and bullying. If these topics are triggers for you, perhaps pick a different title from my novel in verse playlist: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpVe6VlpCwJYz6T7HqBMbDYyVahvxl3yl

Thank you in advance for putting up with my insufficient Spanish. (Video mostly in English… occasional phrases in Spanish.)

Book Blurb: Seventh grade is going to be Iveliz’s year. She’s going to make a new friend, help her abuela Mimi get settled after moving from Puerto Rico, and she is not going to get into any more trouble at school. . . . Except is that what happens? Of course not. Because no matter how hard Iveliz tries, sometimes people say things that just make her so mad. And worse, Mimi keeps saying Iveliz’s medicine is unnecessary—even though it helps Iveliz feel less sad. But how do you explain your feelings to others when you’re not even sure what’s going on yourself? Powerful and compassionate, Andrea Beatriz Arango’s debut navigates mental health, finding your voice, and discovering that those who really love you will stay by your side no matter what.
