Amanda Zieba Learning with the Word Nerd | First Chapter Friday The Lost Year Video Ch 1 Read Aloud Aideo for Middle Schoolers @AmandaZiebatheWordNerd | Uploaded December 2023 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
Friday, December 29, 2023 - We did it! Another FULL YEAR of First Chapter Friday read aloud videos! The Lost Year by Katherine Marsh is my last FCF of the year, and marks 3 full years of weekly videos. I am so grateful you continue to listen in and hope that you are sucked into this high stakes story about cousins, famine and secrets that takes place across 2 continents and 4 generations. I devoured it in 3 days on my couch and am hopefully you’ll love it too. Pssst - Throughout this video there’s a mystery quote sprinkled one word at a time. As you listen, write it down word by word and then stay to the end to see if you’ve got it down correctly.

Don’t forget, to celebrate all of this, I’m giving away 3 classroom libraries containing all 52 books I’ve added to my channel this year (and more great prizes too!) To learn more and enter, click here: amandazieba.com/2023classroomlibrarygiveaway

Book Blurb: Thirteen-year-old Matthew is miserable. His journalist dad is stuck overseas indefinitely, and his mom has moved in his one-hundred-year-old great-grandmother to ride out the pandemic, adding to his stress and isolation. But when Matthew finds a tattered black-and-white photo in his great-grandmother’s belongings, he discovers a clue to a hidden chapter of her past, one that will lead to a life-shattering family secret. Set in alternating timelines that connect the present-day to the 1930s and the US to the USSR, Katherine Marsh’s latest novel sheds fresh light on the Holodomor—the horrific famine that killed millions of Ukrainians, and which the Soviet government covered up for decades. An incredibly timely story of family, survival, and sacrifice, inspired by Marsh’s own family history, The Lost Year is perfect for fans of Ruta Sepetys' Between Shades of Gray and Alan Gratz's Refugee. Longlisted, National Book Awards, 2023
