Europe is responsible for 10 of the Toroidal Field coils which will create a massive magnetic cage to confine the hot plasma of ITER- the biggest fusion device. There are several steps in the fabrication of each of these complex magnets which measure 17 x 9 m and weigh 320 tonnes each— as much as an Airbus A350. When powered with current (68 000 A) their magnetic field will reach up to 11.8 Tesla—about 250 000 times the magnetic field of the Earth!
