FUSION FOR ENERGYThe ITER burning plasma is expected to reach 150 million °C. How are we going to confine it? 18 powerful superconducting magnets, known as Toroidal Field coils, will be powered with 68 000 A to generate a magnetic field of 11.8 Tesla (approximately 1 million times stronger the magnetic fields of the Earth!). In this “cage” we will entrap the energy of a small sun. Europe will manufacture ten of the TF coils and Japan will produce eight plus one spare. They will be the biggest Niobium-tin (Nb3Sn) magnets ever produced. More than 600 people from 26 companies have collaborated with F4E, managing the European contribution to ITER, to produce the ten TF coils.

Russia and Japan will manufacture eight each, India will deliver two, and Europe is responsible for six. To provide Europe's six electron cyclotorn gyrotrons, Fusion for Energy (F4E) has signed a contract with Thales. In parallel, the Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT), another fusion project based in Italy, has also signed a contract with Thales for the fabrication of 16 gyrotrons. ITER, the world's largest fusion experimentWhat is Fusion? How can this energy change our future?FUSION FOR ENERGY2020-05-29 | Fusion is the energy that powers the Sun, whose light and heat have made life possible on Earth. Imagine creating a small sun inside a box that could produce clean, safe energy by using little fuel. For decades scientists have been studying how to achieve this. How far away are we from converting this idea into a reality? ITER, the biggest fusion experiment, will help us find out.
