A new VGM metal cover in 2025, what is this, 2020?
Supposedly today (23 January 2025) is the release date of the second part of the Final Fantasy VII remake ("Rebirth") outside of the PS5, the funniest thing is that I scheduled this cover to come out on this day before I found that fact out, so it ended up being a perfect coincidence.
I've wanted to do a cover of this song for many years at this point, I think the earliest attempts at arranging something for this came around the time I was starting doing VGM covers at home (maybe 2015-2016), but either I couldn't get a full arrangement down or I'd end up doing other tracks.
In mid-2022 I managed to get an arrangement written up that I was happy with and recorded a drum track (along with some other drum tracks for some other songs that will hopefully be worked on and released in the coming months), but other than recording synths for this in late 2022, it sat unfinished until recently when I decided to work on it again.
People who have seen my cover of Schala's Theme from back in 2015 will recognize the guitar I'm using, it's my brother's Custom Shop DK1 from 2005. I love how the guitar looks, and it also sounds amazing -- next to my LTD Snakebyte it's got some of the best sustain and feedback of any guitar I've used.
What you'll also see in this video in shots of the guitars is a completely reworked studio/recording space (still in progress) that me and my dad have been working on since mid/late 2024. That room is the same room I've been recording (at least parts of) covers at home in since youtube.com/watch?v=S-rIfn9Uhgw in 2016, but completely redone with new paint on the walls, a new desk and computer setup, as well as a rack setup on one end of the desk. I really love how it's turned out so far.
