Welcome back! I went to hear a free art talk at the Inside-Out Art Museum by art writer Julie Chun. She is an American freelance art writer, art historian and lecturer living in Shanghai. In 2014 she started writing for Yishu, one of the most important art journals on Chinese art in English language.
Her talk was about public art from several perspectives: 1) Museums: the majority of their permanent collections are locked away. When there is an exhibition, it's often very institutional. 2) Artists: young artists can't afford the space to show their art. 3) Public: entry fees to art exhibitions are more and more expensive. Art is becoming a social status for the upper social class. To solve those conflicts, she dedicated the last 10 years researching underground art movements in Shanghai, hoping to find ways to bring emerging artist works to the ordinary people.
