A cover of Fight With Assailant, from the video game Trails In Sky Second Chapter.
Having recently gotten into the Trails series, there's no way I could pass up covering a song from these games! The series is so damn good imo, I absolutely love the huge interconnected plot between games and not to mention, the music is phenomenal! I could not recommend this series enough if you're a fan of any of the above, or RPGs in general.
There are a ton of songs I want to cover from this series (and there will definitely be more to come!), but I figure I'd start slowly, with a relatively easy song with a fairly simple arrangement. This is one of the battle themes in the second game, and it's got such a catchy hook which makes it a perfect choice for a cover!
In regards to the arrangement, I kept things mostly the same but more rooted in prog, as is my style. Made more us off the distorted organ sound, an obligatory changing time signature section, and a couple of guitar solos in there for good measure! I was definitely trying to go for an old school prog rock vibe with a modern twist to it. In terms of the mix, I was actually really struggling, particularly with the lead guitar tone. For those interested in the technical details, I usually record my leads using the neck pickup on my guitar, as I find it sounds more full when playing notes high up the fretboard, and it's more forgiving when it comes to making tiny mistakes and the small inconsistencies. However, this song definitely felt better on the bridge pickup to play, which ended up coming back to bite me! All the presets I use and my general approach to mixing leads is with the neck pickup, and the different tone really threw a spanner in the works as none of it really worked.
In the end, I tried my best, hopefully it came out well, and hopefully you enjoy this cover!
