Along Highway 101 south of Crescent City California lies a collection of public park lands collectively called the Redwood State and National Parks. We headed out there for fall break last year to see the redwoods and enjoy a completely different environment from what we get there in Nevada.
For our first activity on this trip we headed down to a fairly remote end of Prairie Creek State Park for a short hike through what, for us Nevadans, feels like another world.
Fern Canyon trail is at the end of a rough dirt road that winds through the Redwood forest down the the coast through a Tsunami Warning zone, past a beautiful camp ground. From the trailhead parking the trail heads north for and quickly enters Fern Canyon. The box canyon is littered with giant tree trunks and the walls are lined with ferns and plants that feel very alien to our desert eyes.
There are boardwalks over the creek bed to keep your feet dry, but no one under 13 uses those exclusively. Kids are going to get their feet wet. Best you can hope is they don’t trip and fall. Too many times.
Even in mid Fall, Fern canyon was lush and full of life and the creek was flowing with water from recent rains.
After a fairly short hike up the canyon the trail ascends into the forest crosses a foot bridge and descends back down to the mouth of the canyon.
The other thing we don’t get a lot of in Nevada… Is the beach. The trailhead parking also has beach access.
Even though it was chilly when we were there, our boys love splashing in the waves and digging in the sand almost as much as we love relaxing on a blanket in the sun.
When the sound of chattering of teeth drowns out the sound of the surf you know it’s time to head back to camp.
