These edible beads harness the power of chemistry for weight loss. Researchers presenting at ACS Fall 2025 developed the beads using green tea polyphenols, vitamin E, and an alginate polymer. A study in rats has shown that eating the boba-like beads, even without other dietary changes, may be an effective weight-loss intervention — without the unpleasant side effects of drugs like orlistat.
The group has recruited participants for a human trial, and they’re working with a biotechnology company to manufacture the beads for human consumption.
"Oral polyphenol-based microbeads with synergistic demulsification and fat locking for obesity treatment"
