I love cooking and food and eating, you already knew that. I also love a good bargain. It took me a long time to switch my family from eating conventional grocery store meats and animal products to local pastured meats. It is a lot more expensive, and not as convenient (great combo, right?) But it is something that I feel is important.
I know not every family can manage this. It is a hard situation because a 2 income family might be able to afford it but not have the time or energy to travel around to different farms, and a family with one partner at home (like my family) may have a more flexible schedule during the day to get the food but might not be able to afford it on one income.
Sadly getting quality food to feed my family is seen as a luxury. In some communities in the US families struggle to get anything beyond what is sold in gas stations and convenience stores because companies wont build grocery stores nearby, or because families are without transportation to get to grocery stores. I could not imagine feeding my family that way. It is called food accessibility and it is heart breaking.
I know I am privileged, I know how ridiculous these prices are, I know families are struggling. This is such a hard thing. Not all people in the world have access to quality food and clean water, not all people in the US have access to quality food and clean water, and likely not all people in your local community have access to quality food and clean water.
Perhaps I am wrong, and there is no difference between $5/doz eggs and the $0.75/doz battery eggs I can buy at supermarkets. Perhaps I am a fool and wasting my money. Perhaps I should not be eating animal products anyway. I have no way to know for certain. I am just making my way in the world, making the best decisions I can with what info and resources I have.
Sorry for this long winded ramble. I will end with this. If you are in a position to afford more expensive foods I encourage you to also carve out a small portion of your food budget for those who do not. Donate food or money to a food pantry, volunteer at a soup kitchen or meals on wheels, and remember those with less in your prayers.
