The fall is a great time to spruce up your property with a little maintenance and planting. Seeking out bothersome pests and adding a dash of color to accent your property is something that needs to be done to get in the festive autumn spirit.
Exterminating the Lace Bugs
During the fall and spring examine your azaleas to detect any evidence of lace bug infestation. If the leaves of your azalea appear speckled and yellow, you might be victimized by these little critters that literally suck the juice out of your plant from the underside of the leaf. If this is the case get your hands on some Cygon. It’s a systemic pesticide that will dispose of those bugs even if the spray is only applied to the top of the plant.
Mum’s the Word
When it comes to planting in fall, nothing beats a wonderful set of mums. Sometimes it’s necessary to find a plant in your garden that might have gotten too much sunlight in the summertime like a hosta lilly. We can take that hosta and transplant it to a more suitable place in our garden to make room for a mum. If the hosta has some dead leaves just trim them back. That late season foliage will grow back in the spring so don’t feel guilty about disposing any of its brown leaves.
Mums are a pretty good thing. They’re cheap, rugged and hardy, and come back year after year. And they’re even better now that these flowers are becoming hybridized with southern varieties that give them thicker blooms and brighter than ever flowers. These plants will keep producing vibrant lemon colored flowers until that first hard killing frost in the fall. Until that point, they provide a brilliant accent to the landscape. Once they die, cut them down to the ground and cover them with mulch until the spring.
Looking Out for Your Mum’s
The one caveat about mums is to be careful that they don’t begin to grow too early in the spring because if they do and a frost hits, it will die. If you see that it is beginning to grow, cut it back to the ground and spread loose mulch over the plant to protect it from the dangerous elements.
Decorating for fall with straw bails, pumpkins, scarecrows, and the always welcome mum or two is a part of American tradition. The crisp autumn days just wouldn’t be the same without the enjoyable sights that this particular season offers.
