While exploring a Baptist church cemetery in Macon County, Georgia, I stumbled on something I never expected—engraved fieldstone headstones tossed into a pile, completely removed from the graves they once marked. Fieldstone markers are common in older cemeteries, but engraved ones are incredibly rare. I’d heard of one being here... but I found four more.
Even more shocking? Hidden in the woods nearby, I discovered two more grave markers, buried and nearly lost to time. This is one of those places where the history has been neglected for far too long—but now, the story is being uncovered piece by piece.
I’ll be coming back to excavate the buried stones, but this is where the search begins.
