Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) was first asked to budget, and later formally price, the felling of over 50 wind turbine units located in the Southwest U.S. for North Coast Enterprises, LLC. (North Coast).
Cold temperatures, which delayed oil draining prior to felling, required the project to be performed in two phases, with Phase I-felled units being downsized and removed for recycling while the environmental work was completed on the units to be felled in Phase II. North Coast specified the direction of fall for each unit to keep major debris off the wind farm roads. This facilitated efficient debris removal and permitted ongoing re-powering planning for the wind farm site.
Almost 30 units were felled in less than three working days for Phase I and less than 6 pounds of explosives were used by CDI on each unit.
