An explosion and massive fire destroyed a brewery building early Thursday in Mount Airy. A deck and a portion of a wall were the only things still standing by the afternoon at the family-owned Red Shedman Farm Brewery in the 13000 block of Glissans Mill Road. The fire stunned the brewery's owners, employees and patrons. A family member and her caretaker who live on the property heard the blast around 3:30 a.m. Fire officials told 11 News that 75 firefighters from Frederick, Carroll, Howard and Montgomery counties battled the fire for about two hours. Firefighters remained at the scene for five more hours, checking for possible flare-ups. An 11 News crew at the scene noticed when flames rekindled in one spot and firefighters returned to again douse the building with water.
