Hidden alongside Interstate 8 in Southern California are abandoned sections of Historic US Highway 80, the old highway that once carried travelers through the rugged mountains between San Diego and Imperial Counties.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of US Highway 80, which originally stretched 2,725 miles from Savannah, Georgia, to San Diego, California. Decades before Interstate 8 was built, Old Highway 80 crossed the mountains through Mountain Springs and In-Ko-Pah Gorge, following a route with a history that stretches back to early wagon roads and stagecoach travel.

In this episode of Sidetrack Adventures, we follow the abandoned remains of Historic Highway 80 through Mountain Springs, walk sections of the original concrete highway bypassed nearly 90 years ago, and see how Interstate 8 was eventually built around and over the old road. Along the way, we uncover pieces of Southern California highway history that thousands of drivers pass every day without ever knowing they're there.
