A 22-year-old Utica man died Sunday after a water rescue at Sandy Island Beach State Park, prompting renewed reminders about the risks of swimming in open water.

The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office said three people were swimming when a current pulled them deeper into Lake Ontario.

One person made it back to shore on their own, while another was rescued by people nearby, including on-duty lifeguards.
