Asking Questions - Level 3 - Experimental Questions
In this video Paul Andersen shows you how to asking questions in a mini-lesson on experimental questions. Two examples are included in the video and two additional examples are included in the linked thinking slides.
TERMS
Evidence - anything presented to support a claim
Experimental Question - a question that guides a testable scientific experiment
Hypothesis - a proposed explanation based on evidence
Observation - a statement about something you notice
Question - a sentence that asks for information
Scientific principles - fundamental concepts that explain natural phenomenon
Variable - a factor that can be changed, controlled or measured
- Independent Variable - the manipulated variable in an experiment (cause)
- Dependent Variable - the responding variable in an experiment (effect)
This progression is based on the Science and Engineering Practices elements from the NRC document A Framework for K-12 Science Education. “Ask questions that can be investigated within the scope of the classroom, outdoor environment, and museums and other public facilities with available resources and, when appropriate, frame a hypothesis based on observations and scientific principles.”

In this video Paul Andersen explains how objects in contact with varying temperatures will eventually reach thermal equilibrium with equal temperatures. The amount of thermal energy transferred is related to the mass and temperature of the objects since momentum is transferred and conserved along the margin.

In this video Paul Andersen explains how light can be treated as both a particle and a wave. Physicists use scale to determine which model to use when studying light. When the wavelength of light is equivalent to the size of the object a wave model is used. When the energy is equivalent to the energy of a photon a particle model is used.

In this video Paul Andersen explains how the pressure, volume, amount, and temperature of an ideal gas are related. Absolute zero of a gas can be determined by varying the temperature and measuring the corresponding volume of a gas sample. Several examples including Boyles and Charles Law are included.
