When not discovered before highway construction begins, unknown buried utilities (particularly related to oil and gas) in the right of way (ROW) may cause serious scheduling disruptions, as well as higher construction costs, safety issues, and environmental risks. Searching for a faster, less expensive method of scanning ROW for these unknown utilities, Texas A&M Transportation Institute researchers evaluated, selected, and tested the application of newly available geophysical measurement systems. They found two types of techniques that are financially and technically feasible to detect and map unknown pipelines or other utilities in the ROW.
