The Texas Department of Transportation’s Roadway Design Manual recently emphasized the use of SUPs, or Shared Use Paths, which provide greater separation from roadway traffic, over sidewalks and on-street bicycle lanes. The research focused on using existing datasets to assist transportation professionals with estimating the potential number of non-motorized users before a SUP is built.
A collaboration between TxDOT and the Texas A&M Transportation Institute combined currently available data, including TxDOT's Texas Bicycle and Pedestrian Count Exchange, to create an easy-to-use estimation tool. Results from this research will be incorporated into future manuals to improve corridor planning and design.
