This podcast describes the evolution of an automated database upgrade process for a system with hundreds of geographically scattered sites, each having multiple SQL server databases. Initially, updates were done manually by developers, which was time-consuming and error-prone, particularly when non-IT staff had to run the scripts. This led to the automation of delta script creation using commercial tools, followed by the development of "BuildByScript", an application for running SQL scripts and building databases. The "Generic Implementer" was then created to automate the entire upgrade process for multiple databases per site, handling backups and error reporting. Finally, the "Universal Installer" was introduced to manage upgrades for sites with varying database versions by selecting and running the appropriate "Generic Implementer" package.
