While I was in Penrith, I spotted something new attached to the public rubbish bins — and I think other councils should take notice.
In NSW, we have the Return and Earn program, where eligible drink containers can be returned for a 10-cent refund. For most people, 10 cents might not sound like much. But for people struggling financially, collecting bottles and cans can help put a little extra food on the table.
We have all seen people searching through rubbish bins or pushing trolleys filled with bottles and cans.
The last time I spoke to a man collecting cans, he told me he didn't like digging through bins, but he felt he had to. He said it was better than stealing or doing something else to survive.
He had a good point.
In Penrith, I noticed that special holders have been attached to some rubbish bins. Instead of throwing your recyclable bottle or can into the rubbish, you can leave it in the separate holder. Someone who needs it can then collect it without digging through the rubbish or making a mess.
Such a simple idea, but such a positive act of kindness.
It helps recycling, keeps people from digging through rubbish bins, and gives someone doing it tough a little extra help while allowing them to maintain some dignity.
Other councils should consider adopting this idea.
Sometimes, helping people doesn't require a massive program or millions of dollars. Sometimes, a small change can make someone's day just a little easier.
