The Event Horizon Telescope is an array of radio telescopes across the world which combine their powers to create a single telescope with extraordinary vision. It observed the galaxy 3C279, called a "blazar", to look at a jet of material blasting away form the core. It measured the speed of this blob as 99.5% the speed of light! Over the course of just 6 days the physical motion of the blob is obvious, even from the staggering distance of 5+ billion light years.
