Phosphine is a biomarker, a molecule made by life on Earth. Finding it in the atmosphere of another planet *could* mean the presence of life. Astronomers found what looks like phosphine in the atmosphere of Venus at levels of 20 parts per billion. They ruled out a number of non-biological processes to make it, though it's impossible to rule out everything.
