Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares warned that Europe is facing a growing wave of threats, from hybrid attacks to disinformation campaigns.
Speaking at the Informal Meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers — Gymnich in Druids Glen, County Wicklow, Ireland, Albares referred to the facts presented by Germany and said the European Union is confronted with many serious challenges.
He pointed in particular to hybrid threats and disinformation, including disinformation around Ceuta, saying he was sorry to see some EU governments amplify it.
Albares stressed that Europe is built on unity and solidarity. Without solidarity, he warned, there would be no European Union.
He repeated that the EU’s southern land borders are just as important as its eastern, northern and western borders.
Albares said Europe cannot allow disinformation to enter its societies, especially when it is amplified by governments inside the European Union.
He warned that many actors outside the EU want to divide Europe and make it weak because they do not want a strong Union.
Spain, he said, supports reflection on strengthening the European External Action Service and giving Europe a stronger voice in foreign affairs.
Albares also backed moving forward with qualified majority voting in foreign policy, while stressing continued support for Ukraine and renewed efforts toward peace in the Middle East through the two-state solution.
His message was direct: Europe must be strong, united and clear. Disinformation cannot be allowed to weaken EU solidarity — whether the challenge comes from the east, the south or beyond Europe’s borders.
