Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares delivered a strong doorstep statement at the Informal Meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers — Gymnich in Druids Glen, County Wicklow, Ireland.
Albares congratulated the Irish Presidency and said Spain fully supports Ireland in making the Presidency a success for the whole European Union.
He said Europe is living through a moment where unity and solidarity are essential.
Albares stressed that Spain has always shown solidarity with EU partners — not only politically, but with facts: troops, funds and support for Ukrainian refugees since the start of Russia’s war.
He cited Spain’s support for Germany, Ukraine, Italy during the Lampedusa migration pressure, Denmark over Greenland, and EU countries facing hybrid threats.
But Albares warned that Spain expects the same solidarity when it comes to the EU’s southern land borders.
He said the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla are not only Spanish borders — they are the southern land borders of the European Union and the EU’s only land border with Africa.
Albares said these borders are as important as Europe’s eastern, northern and western borders.
He also denounced disinformation around Ceuta and Melilla, warning that some EU governments had amplified false narratives.
His warning was powerful: without solidarity, there is no European Union. Europe must not allow external actors — or disinformation inside the EU — to divide and weaken it.
Albares also called for a stronger European voice in foreign affairs, including progress toward qualified majority voting, continued support for Ukraine, and renewed efforts for a two-state solution in the Middle East.
