In this video, I break down a recent upload from a content creator named Weyni Tesfai discussing why Black Americans and diaspora members are leaving Africa, where she argues that people simply arrive with unrealistic expectations.
While personal accountability matters when moving anywhere, the narrative that Africa bears no responsibility for why people leave or fail is completely backwards. Africa is operating as a low-trust ecosystem. If an African country’s own diaspora refuses to return—and global foreign direct investment remains critically low due to corruption, bureaucratic gatekeeping, and broken infrastructure—you cannot blame Black Americans for facing those exact same barriers on the ground.
I address the reality of useless government investment authorities, the myth that developing nations "don't owe investors anything," and the growing playbook of repatriation creators who struggle to build or scale real businesses on the continent, only to turn around and sell high-ticket coaching, digital courses, and webinars back to the diaspora.
