The recent "not guilty" murder verdict for Rick Chow in the fatal shooting of 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton brings a historical, repeating pattern right back to the surface. From the 1991 killing of Latasha Harlins in Los Angeles to the case of Peter Liang in New York, the tense relationship between the Black community and Asian merchants is a structural friction that was bound to happen.
Looking at this from a global perspective—and seeing how mirror dynamics play out between Indian merchants and local Africans right here in East Africa—it comes down to a specific systemic structure. The "model minority" myth is often weaponized to give certain immigrant groups a proximity to privilege, creating a buffer class. When a group enters a community, dominates the local economy, and sees that the residents don't own the businesses or control their own resources, a dangerous psychological dynamic takes root. They begin to view the community through a lens of incompetence, laziness, or failure. This bias makes it easy to dehumanize people and justify extreme, fatal actions over minor incidents, like a bottle of water or a container of juice.
We have to face the reality of how these groups truly view us and understand that they will not give our youth a pass. As parents, we must have serious conversations with our kids about how to navigate these spaces safely. Teach them how to interact when entering foreign-owned stores—keep your hands visible, never put items away before paying, completely avoid confrontations, and don't underestimate how quickly a situation can turn deadly. If we want to change this dynamic permanently, we have to start building, working together, and owning the businesses within our own communities.
