In this video, I dive into a trending topic regarding African women living in China and the harsh labels being placed on them by the local community. I respond to a viral video from a young lady in Guangzhou who expressed her shock and embarrassment after being mistaken for a sex worker and hearing that certain clubs are known for "working girls."
While many are quick to blame the women for damaging our collective reputation, I take a different approach by looking at the systemic "pathology" of the issue. Just like a medical diagnosis, we have to look at the underlying cause: the economic instability and corruption within many African nations that force people to seek opportunities abroad in countries like China, Dubai, or Qatar. When you combine high family pressures back home with limited job opportunities and high living costs in a foreign land, many find themselves in a desperate position of survival.
I argue that we can't simply "seek" respect from others while we are in a position of economic weakness. True respect and a change in global perception will only come through power, development, and cleaning up our own house so that our people don't have to resort to these measures to survive.
