You don’t need all the gear to enjoy your bike ride, but you do need a few simple things to keep you out of trouble in case of any mishaps on the trails.

In this video, GO Outdoors mechanic Tam talks you through some of the most essential tools you need to take on your ride, including:

Multi-tool
You can fix 99% of the problems you ever face on a bike with a multi tool.

Puncture repair kit
Punctures are one of the most common problems you’ll face on a bike ride. But a flat tyre doesn’t need to ruin your ride. As long as you've got a puncture repair kit or a spare inner tube and a pump, you’ll be back riding in no time.

Phone
A phone isn’t essential to your ride, but you’ll be able to use it for maps and to call for help if you face an emergency.

Bag
You’ll need a bag to carry all of your other essential items, including food and drink to keep you well nourished on the trail.

Cable ties
Cable ties are incredibly useful in so many situations. It’s always worth keeping a couple in your bag. They don’t take up much space either.

Helmet
Arguably the most important piece of equipment in your arsenal, a helmet keeps your head safe.

Bike lights
Don’t get caught short. Make sure to take some lights with you in case you end up riding past dusk.
