The process of monitoring possible future shocks for the EU was launched in the European Parliament during the COVID-19 crisis, and developed further to Russia's war on Ukraine. The annual 'Future Shocks' series seek to provide up-to-date, objective, and authoritative information on global risks, and highlight specific risks with a potentially strong impact on the EU, and analyses the existing capabilities, resilience and possible responses of the EU system in the face of these multiple challenges. This 2023 edition discusses 15 different risks related to geopolitics, climate change, health, economics and democracy that could occur in the coming decade, and 10 policy responses which could help mitigate them.
Marc ANGEL, EP Vice-President will open the event. In a first sequence, ɴienne BASSOT, Director of the Members’ Research Service (EPRS) will present the outcomes of the study, highlighting major risks for the EU in the coming decade and their possible consequences.
In a second sequence, Wolfgang HILLER, Director for Impact Assessment and Foresight (EPRS), will moderate a panel of five EPRS policy analysts on a selection of main risks and responses (Europe and global security, Europe's new partnerships in a polarised world, critical supply chains, wellbeing and mental health of young Europeans, information sphere and democracy), followed by a questions and answers session.
