At the Calgary Stampede in early July 2025, Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, made some promising statements about Canada becoming an energy Superpower, making Western Canadians feel hopeful that he meant to accelerate oil and gas projects. But so far the biggest project is all about tree planting! Hodgson and Corey Hogan, MP for Calgary Confederation, announced a $125 million project to plant 12 million trees and 'rewild' Alberta.on July 21, 2025. It is part of the 2 billion tree planting project that Greta Thunberg got Canada all entangled with when she met with then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Sept. 27, 2019, with Trudeau making this an election promise. The problem is, there is nowhere to really plant trees in Canada, other than the so-called 'white zone,' as explained in our first video on this topic. Another problem is that this project means the trees are $10/ a tree; meanwhile, the forestry industry plants 600 million trees a year, at a cost of about $2.00 all in. So, the new tree planting plan includes planting in areas once cleared for farming in the Peace Region that have foundered - neither forest now, nor used for agriculture. For years, the forestry industry has lobbied to access such lands, reforest and then harvest them - creating jobs, industry, tax revenues. They were denied. Another area is that of the Siksika Nation in Southern Alberta which is in the 'white zone' - but also an area suboptimal for trees. This is on open prairie land and in the desertified Palliser Triangle. As in the city of Calgary, the west side of the city is quite treed and green, because it is somewhat protected from the elements by the high foothills. However, the east side of the city is not so protected - it is out on the bald prairie and fully exposed to 100 km/h Chinook winds, blazing sun, or freezing winters. Will Canada become an energy Superpower, or be reduced to planting billions of trees for no climate or economic benefit - as outlined in a report on the 2 billion tree project by CBC's "The House."
