Can the world just ‘Go Electric!’ to solve the energy crisis and save the planet? That's the plan that was announced at London Climate Week by the EU, Canada, and several other participating countries. A new website was set up "Electrify Now" listing all the claimed advantages. “Electrify Now is a global response to the energy crisis and fossil fuel volatility and aims to accelerate clean electrification.” The war with Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz where significant oil and LNG transports come from, and so electrification is being promoted as an alternative to oil and gas. But the problem is that electricity is a secondary source of power, made from a primary source of power - typically natural gas, coal, hydro or nuclear power plants. Activists claim this will hasten the transition to renewables, but the most recent Statistical Review of World Energy 2026, shows that in 2025, wind and solar power combined still only provided 3.3% of the world's energy, with all renewables excluding hydro providing 5.9%. The percentage of global energy consumption that is met by fossil fuels is now 86%. A few years ago, it was 81% and activists were predicting that fossil fuel consumption would decline rapidly. Instead, the share has increased substantially! Another challenge is that there is not a sufficient material supply chain of special metals, and many important components, like transformers and switches, are back-ordered by several years.
