The Oilers are out of the Stanley Cup playoffs. And the Spring Economic forecast is out, too. After being promised that Canada would 'build at speed not seen in generations' the Spring Economic forecast looks like a case of "Big Hat. No Cattle." Even though some 15 major projects are touted by the government as progress, a number of media reports, including one by the Fraser Institute, show that most of these projects were already approved; some are halfway to completion. People have wondered how Canada, a self-described 'climate leader', could choose China as its new strategic partner. Michelle Stirling, Communications Manager for Friends of Science Society, suggests that as described in the book "Breakneck: China's Quest to Engineer the World", perhaps the Prime Minister is thinking that China could help Canada build big and fast. Indeed, the development and modernization of China in the past few decades is astounding, but there are challenges to making a deal with China, as many commentators in the media have put forth. The book "Two Innocents in Red China" recounts the travels of Pierre Elliot Trudeau, father of Justin Trudeau, then a citizen, not a politician, as told by Quebec journalist and fellow traveller Jacques Hebert, on their Chinese government sponsored trip back in 1960. At a parting speech, Trudeau had pointed out that China and Canada are only separated by an ocean called the Pacific, suggesting interest in future constructive cooperation. However, as Robert Lyman recently pointed out, Canada has many deficits in our existing, basic, essential infrastructure - our existing ports need modernizing and upgrading; the Trans Canada Highway and existing rail services need upgrading and expansion. Unfortunately, there is a tendency to promote glitzy projects (like High Speed Rail or wind and solar farms) which rely on subsidies and which don't return revenues, over important basic infrastructure needs. With the Strait of Hormuz blockade and conflict, Canada is ideally positioned to capitalize on the oil and natural gas deficits in the world. We don't need more "Big Hat, No Cattle" cheer leading; we just need to be pragmatic and practical, and 'Build that Pipe.'
