The minute Mrs. Elton comes on the scene, Emma looks like a waaaay better character. Emma may have flaws, but Mrs. Elton is the worst! I think Austen writes some of the best mean girls and I love to read about them, with Austen's narrator inviting me to laugh at these characters with her. Emma's mean girl enters quite late in the novel. It's a this point the reading experience gets a lot more fun.
